Medical Fitness Specialist
Helping people with medical and health conditions to become and stay active for physical and mental health
Struggling to stay active with a chronic condition?
I am a Medical Fitness Specialist.
This specialized training allows me to better support individuals who want to exercise or become more physically active but find it challenging due to chronic health or medical conditions.
This includes (but is not limited to):
diabetes, heart and lung conditions, neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, arthritis, osteoporosis, and autoimmune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, (and my other areas of specialization listed to the side).
Many people living with medical conditions struggle to start or maintain physical activity often not because they don’t want to, but because they haven’t felt safe, supported, or truly heard in the process. Over time, this can contribute to worsening symptoms and impact both physical and mental health.
At the same time, the right approach to exercise can play a powerful role in improving quality of life.
My goal is to help people safely become (and/or stay) active in a way that feels appropriate for their body, their condition, and their lived experience.
A Medical Exercise Specialist helps bridge the gap between healthcare and fitness. This often means working as part of your broader healthcare team alongside your doctor, physiotherapist, pharmacist, psychologist, and others to provide safe, effective, and individualized exercise guidance.
I prioritize creating an environment where you feel safe, respected, and heard with a strong commitment to privacy and confidentiality.
In addition, I have completed training in accurate blood pressure measurement and hold Red Cross Intermediate First Aid certification, to further support safe exercise participation.
Medical clearance may be required before starting.
Areas of Specialization
Specialized Assessments and Exercises for the following conditions:
scoliosis
hypermobility (including but not limited to EDS &HSD)
chronic Musculoskeletal pain
pelvic floor conditions
concussion/post concussion
MS
Lung conditions (COPD and Asthma)
May require medical clearance
My services are not covered under medical or extended health insurance, but may be eligible through workplace wellness or fitness spending accounts.
Start, Continue, or Return to the Activities That Matter to You
Exercise isn’t just about “working out.”
For many people, it’s about being able to participate in the activities that make life feel like your life.
Whether you’re just getting started, trying to stay consistent, or working toward returning to something you’ve had to step away from—you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Alongside my medical exercise training, I also hold certifications in personal training, golf fitness, and tai chi instruction. I use these to help bridge the gap between healthcare and real-life activity.
This means we can:
Build a starting point that feels safe and manageable
Continue progressing in a way that works with your body and your condition
Modify movements so they feel more accessible and sustainable
Break down specific sports or activities to support participation or return
Clients I work with often have goals like:
A child wanting to participate in more practices—and enjoy their sport without constant pain
A competitive or high-level athlete working to stay in their sport or return to performance after setbacks
A parent or grandparent wanting to get down on the floor and back up with confidence
An older adult hoping to return to walking groups, classes, or activities like pickleball
Someone who simply wants to keep up with their kids or grandkids and feel more capable day-to-day
Young children (as young as 3–4) who are able to participate and follow simple instruction, building comfort and confidence in movement and play
For some, this looks like getting onto the golf course for the first time—or getting back to it after time away.
For others, it may be staying active without flare-ups, participating in a class again, or simply moving through daily life with more ease.
For clients experiencing stress, pain, or nervous system overwhelm, I may also incorporate elements of tai chi and breathwork to support relaxation, body awareness, and overall well-being.
The focus is always the same:
helping you participate in life in a way that feels safe, sustainable, and meaningful to you.
What to Expect in Sessions
Sessions are individualized and designed around your history, goals, and how your body is feeling that day.
A strong focus is placed on creating an environment where you feel safe, respected, and heard, with a commitment to privacy and confidentiality.
Exercises are adapted in real time based on symptoms such as pain, fatigue, or flare-ups. We often use simple check-ins (like pain ratings) to guide decisions—adjusting movements, positions, or volume as needed.
These check-ins also help determine whether we simply need to modify the session, whether support from a healthcare professional (such as a physiotherapist or physician) may be helpful, or whether more immediate medical attention may be appropriate.
My education, first aid training, and personal experience all contribute to creating a safety-focused and supportive environment where concerns are taken seriously.
The goal is not to push through pain, but to work within a range that feels manageable and productive.
How Sessions Work
All new clients begin with an initial assessment and follow-up, where we review your history, assess movement, and develop a personalized exercise plan.
Ongoing sessions focus on progressing your program, adapting to how your body is responding, and supporting consistency over time.
Education & Support
Sessions include time for education, discussion, and questions—helping you better understand your body, your condition, and how to approach movement.
The goal is not just to guide you through exercises, but to help you build confidence and develop tools you can carry forward.
Consistency & Progress
Progress looks different for everyone—whether that’s reducing pain, improving function, or returning to activities that matter to you.
Consistency (both in and between sessions) is one of the most important factors in long-term success, and support is provided to help you stay on track.
Anam Fitness for Living was created to help people improve and maintain their quality of life through specialized, individualized fitness.
I work with individuals living with medical conditions, chronic pain, and complex bodies—offering a space where they feel safe, heard, and supported while still progressing in meaningful ways.
Anam is a Gaelic word meaning “soul” or “breath.” Both are central to this work. Breath supports how we move, regulate, and heal, while “soul” reflects that each person is more than a diagnosis.
The name is represented through a tree logo I designed—symbolizing life, growth, and connection. Its curves reflect the reality that bodies aren’t always straight or predictable, and its leaves represent individuality within connection.
Anam began with a focus on scoliosis and has grown to support a wide range of conditions—many shaped by personal and family experience. What remains constant is the approach: individualized, education-focused, and built around the person in front of me.
This is a space to feel heard, move safely, and build strength in a way that supports your life.
I offer both in-person and virtual sessions for clients within Canada.
